Why asking ‘why’ is not enough

‘Why’ might be the most obvious question when it comes to reflecting on your experience or actions. But ‘why’ can choke you when you truly don’t know the answer. It can also easily be satisfied with the answer that seems most obvious or acceptable.

Curious questions

I like to ask curious questions that open up the conversation, get us out of the grooves of well-practiced narratives and allow us to notice the details in the moment.

‘What if’ questions evoke curiosity. ‘What if’ is an expansive question and invites imagination. ‘What if’ is a question that allows us to break with convention or social desirability.

‘How’ questions get you into action. Without action, the most meaningful inquiry remains theory. When we ask, ‘how?’, you begin to experiment and prototype a new way of being.

‘What is it like to be you today?’ is a more useful check-in question than ‘how are you?’

‘How are you complicit in…?’ might be an uncomfortable question, but one that helps you be honest with yourself.

Reflective Practice

Guiding you in developing and cultivating a reflective practice is part of your coaching process.

Your practice will naturally form around the creative and reflective processes that make sense to you.

It’s about what you can integrate into your day-to-day life with ease.

An opportunity to notice the small details as well as the broader landscape of your life.

A way to gain clarity and spot patterns over time.

A place to make progress visible, whether it’s slow and steady or comes in bursts.

A reminder of what you have accomplished.
